Building Trust - The Foundation

In my previous Building Trust post, I used Robert Bruce Shaw's words to define trust.  Every building has a foundation and so here I will provide five elements of our foundation for Building Trust as written by the two authors mentioned in the previous post.

Shaw and Stephen M.R. Covey both listed "integrity" and "results" as key components in trusting relationships, after all, trust is about relationships within every aspect of our lives.  Shaw differs from Covey (although in the end we will probably find many similarities) with the element of "concern" as one of his three principles of trust.  Covey produced four elements with the two different components of "intent" and "capabilities."

Using these five elements, we now have a map for trust: integrity, capabilities, intent, concern, and results (ICICR.)  Adopting word association with our foundation for trust:

Integrity - honesty, uprightedness, virtue, soundness

Capabilities - talents, skills, knowledge, capacities, abilities

Intent - purpose, aim, plan, agenda

Concern - interest, relationship, business

Results - effects, consequences, accomplishments, performance

To give us all a perspective and same frame of reference, we can use a recent Times-Union article (http://www.jacksonville.com/tu-online/stories/102108/met_346558134.shtml) that will surely generate conversations.  This hopefully will generate understanding and with that understanding, hopefully fresh ideas in both the workplace and home.

Thoughts?  We can all learn more through participation - trust me!
